For a change, this is not one of my original patterns. I love it and have tatted it many times to be used for gifts to my friends or to hang on my Christmas Tree. I've been calling it Tree of Life...don't know where I got that title since I went to tat it again I noticed there was no title on this pattern. It comes from a 1980 publication called "Tatting for Today" by DMC. This book is full of snowflakes, collars, cuffs, necklaces and gorgeous pin cushions. If that interests you, keep a check of Amazon and Ebay and grab it when you see it. If you're curious about the "trunk" of the tree - it is 60 stitches done with only the first half of the doublestich.

Josephine's Heart

I call this Josephine's Heart because it uses Josephine knots on the outside border. The outside border is also done with double shuttle. Enjoy!

Tatty Patty

This is a close up of the Josephine Knot. This one consists of 9 first halfs of the double stitch. Simply form a ring of ALL first halfs of the double stitch. You need to hold the stitches tightly between thumb and index finger so that they will not twist. Practice the Josephine's Knot if you're not familiar with it before you go on to the pattern. In the pattern, I will say JK and you will know to tat a ring of 9 first half stitches of the double stitch.

Pattern:

Center medallion:
Shuttle only: The center medallion consists of 6 rings of 3ds, p, 6 ds, p, 6 ds, p, 3 ds CLR. Join each to the last. You will make three of these and join them as you see in the photo above.

Outside Border: (this is done with two shuttles...designate them #1 and #2) I find two different colored shuttles work best.

Double Shuttle: You will use Shuttle 1 to make chains then drop that shuttle and pick up Shuttle 2 to make the Josephine Knot, drop that shuttle and pick up Shuttle 1 to finish the chain.....

Two shuttles: Join them at the top between the two center medallions. Shuttle #1: Ch 3 ds, p 2 ds, Shuttle #2: JK, Shuttle #1 2 ds, p, 3 ds, join to top of next ring on medallion Repeat * to * twice. Ch 3 ds, p, 2 ds, JK, 2 ds, p, 3ds

TURN, R 9ds, j between the two medallions as pictured, 9 ds, CLR TURN.

Ch 3 ds, p, 2 ds, JK, 2 ds, p 3 ds, j to next p of medallion repeat * to again and Join to bottom ring of medallion.

Bottom large loop: Ch 2 ds, 7 p sep by 2 ds, j in a ring into the same spot on the heart.

Continue the other side of the heart by reversing the instruction above ending in the center at the top of the heart where you started this row. Tie and cut threads.

A fresh new medallion for a brand new year. I just felt like using my David Reed wooden shuttle so sat down and tatted up this medallion in size 10 thread. The shuttle is a larger one that I ordered specifically for larger size threads.

Here is the medallion - or small doily. It measures approximately 5 inches across and is, of course, super easy - so you new tatters get your shuttle.

The instructions:

Center Ring. 8 large rings as follows: R 3 ds, p, 7 ds, p, 7 ds, p, 3 ds CLR. Turn Ch 3 ds, Turn. R. 3 ds, j to last p of last R, 7 ds, p, 7 ds, p, 3 ds, CLR. Repeat * to * for 8 rings. Join the last Ch 3 to the base of the first ring. Tie and cut threads.

Next row: Join shuttle and ball between any two rings in the center. Ch 8 ds, p, 8 ds, join between next two rings. Repeat around. Tie and cut threads.

Last Row: Join shuttle and ball to any p from the last row. Ch 2 ds, p, 2 ds, p, 2 ds. R. 2 ds, 5 p sep by 2 ds, 2 ds. CLR. Ch 2 ds, p, ds, p 2 ds, join to next p of last row. Repeat around. Tie and cut threads.

Tat Up a Christmas Angel

A Tatted Christmas Angel

This happens when I sit and watch TV at night and my hands are idle....so, here's another holiday piece. This one was done in size 30 thread and is approximately 2 1/4" tall and wide. Great for the narrow top of the Christmas tree or to decorate packages. I love to put them in with my christmas cards to friends.

Here we go:

Head: Shuttle only: R 8 ds, 5 p sep by 1 ds (make the center p large) 8 ds, CLR. Turn (for beginners this means turn completely upside down so the head is now completely in your hand.

Body: R 3ds, p, 3 ds, p, 3 ds 5 p sep by 2 ds, 3 ds, p, 3 ds, p, 3 ds CLR. Tie and cut threads. At this point I wind the threads into the head and into the body over and over again and tie them securely - this will make the head and body rigid so the head doesn't flop around.

Wing: Tie shuttle and ball to the first p on the body ring. Ch 3 ds, 3 p sep by 2 ds, 3 ds, R 6 ds, p, 6 ds, CLR. Ch 3 ds, 3 p sep by 2 ds, 3 ds, j to next p on body ring. Ch 3 ds, j to next p on body ring. ch 2 ds, p, 2 ds, join to next p for a total of 4 times. Ch 3 ds, j to next p, wing: same as the first wing j to last p on body ring. Tie and cut threads.

Tie shuttle and ball between ch 3 and ch 2, p, ch 2. on body ring. Ch 6 ds, p 6 ds, j between next two chains. Continue for total of 4 chains. Tie and cut threads.

*LR 3 ds, 3 p sep by 2 ds, 3 ds j to center p of first chain 6 of last row 3 ds, 3 p sep by 2 ds, 3 ds, CLR. Turn. Chain 8 ds, p, 8 ds, Turn,* continue on for the 4 large rings and chains on the skirt.

Note, you can make a hanger for it by crocheting a chain about 60 stitches will do and thread it through the long picot on the angel's head. You can use a thin ribbon too. Also a nice little bow made with thin ribbon and glued under the head really makes these angels so pretty. I've also, at times, glued a jewel on the head for a face. Enjoy!

A New Snowflake to Add to Your Holiday Decor

This is a quick new pattern - my holiday gift to you. Mine is not blocked, please forgive but I simply did not have the time. I would expect you to starch and block yours either using regular starch or if you want it really stiff use Elmer's glue and water.

I used size 10 thread and my snowflake is approximately 5 inches across. You can use smaller size thread for a smaller, more delicate looking snowflake.

Center with shuttle only:
R 3 ds, p, 10 ds, p, 10 ds, p, 3 ds CLR. Leave 1/16" thread *R 3 ds, j to last p of last R, 10 ds, p, 10 ds, p, 3 ds CLR* Repeat * to * joining the last R to the first R. Tie and cut threads.

Join shuttle and ball between any two of the center rings. Ch 3 ds, 9 p sep by 1 ds, 3 ds, j between next two ring. Continue all around....DO NOT CUT THREADS.

Snowflake arms:

*Ch 15 ds, R 5 ds, 5 p sep by 1 ds, 5 ds, CLR, ch 15 ds, j between next two chains* - continue for all six arms. Tie and cut threads.

Small Tatted Doily Or Large Medallion

I used the 6 point "snowflake" medallion from below and expanded it into a small doily. Using size 30 thread my doily measures about 5 inches across but would be much larger if size 20 or size 10 thread were used.

There are only two extra rows on this piece. After you finish tatting the 6 point snowflake proceed as follows:

Row 1
*R 8 ds, j to any outside pico of rings on snowflake 8 ds, CLR. Turn ch 8 ds, p, 8 ds, turn. R 8 ds, j to 3rd p on R of snowflake, 8 ds CLR. Turn ch 8 ds, 3 p sep by 1 ds, 8 ds Turn.* repeat from * to * all around. Tie and cut threads.

Row 2
*R 10 ds j to first p of 3 p chain in last row, 10 ds CLR. Turn 2 ds p, 2 ds Turn, R 10 ds, j to next p 10 ds, CLR. Turn 2 ds p, 2 ds, Turn R. 10 ds, j to next p, 10 ds. CLR. VARIATIONS IN TATTING With Tattypatty

VARIATIONS: taking one pattern and expanding it or changing it into another. (sorry if my patterns look kind of sloppy - none of them are starched or blocked because I'm always always in a hurray) ;-)

Example:

ONE: Just a small four cornered motiff. The center is as the center in my last small motiff and is a variation of that motiff.

Center 4 Large rings of 3 ds, p, 10 ds, p 10 ds, p 3 ds CLR. Join the rings together as shown.
Second Row: Join to any p on center ring *Ch 5 ds, 3 p sep by 1 ds (make center p large) 5 ds, j to same p on center ring. ch 8 ds - j between two rings. ch 8 ds j to next p on next ring*

That's all there is too it.

Variation TWO: Same as above only make 5 large center rings. Now you have a star!

Variation THREE: Same as above only make 6 large center rings. this can go on and on. (tip for the 6 large rings leave just a bit of thread between rings (about 1/16")

A Simple Tatted Motiff

Just a simple little motiff but you can build it into edgings or doilies - whatever:

The pattern is super simple. 4 center rings of 3 ds, p, 10 ds, p, 10 ds, p 3 ds CLR.

Outside row: *chain 5 ds, p, 5 ds, j to same p. Ch 10 ds p 10 ds j to next p* repeat * to *.

So that's the motiff - plain and simple. Here's a photoshopped image of how an edging might look - you can join as I did or join the other picots on each side as well....your choice.

VARIATION:

and in an edging:

Center is the same as the first motiff.

Outside row: Join to any picot *ch 10 ds, p, 10 j in same picot. Ch 5 ds, 3 p sep by 1 ds, 5 ds j to next picot* repeat * to * all around.

A Big Hello From Angel

Hi everyone. I'm working on a nice medallion pattern that I will put on here tonight or tomorrow. In the meantime, I want to introduce my dearest friend. This is Angel, my 16 year old blue point himalayan. She's been a bit under the weather lately with a bladder infection and a small cyst in her tail. Please send her good thoughts. I know all you animal lovers will surely do that.

Tatting and Crochet Tips for Heavy Starching

I don't buy starch for my tatting and crocheted pieces. I just use Elmer's glue and warm water. Most of my pieces are small - for large doilies try to find Argo powdered starch - its still the best.

Okay - since my countertops are tile and not real flat I keep foam core board that is about 12 X 14 inches and cover it in wax paper. Then I use a small cup (those little cups jello comes in are great for this. A couple of squirts of Elmer's glue, fill the cup with warm water, mix well. Then I use a cottonball (but sometime just use my fingers) and first wet the wax paper where I'm going to put the tatted piece. Lay the piece down nice and flat and start dabbing it with the glue and water mixture on the cottonball. When you get it wet enough so that it lies flat, pull it into shape and open the picoes with a toothpick. Then put it someplace (I use the top of the fridge) so that it can dry overnight. No need to press or (ugh) iron the piece. When you wash the piece, the glue washes right out.

Just thought I'd add a picture of the foam core board wrapped in wax paper. Black or a dark color is best so you can see the tatting better. This keeps the tatting out of the way while it dries and there is no need to iron.

BTW these are some of the new patterns I'm compiling in a new book. Don't know when it will be finished but its in the works.

Tattypatty's Simple Tatted Bookmark

For my bookmark I used size 20 cotton thread but use whatever you wish to make it more delicate or heavier.

I put this up to show you what it looks like. Its a variation on an old pattern. I'm rushed tonight but will try to put up the instructions as soon as possible so please check back.

Okay, let's see if you can follow thru the diagrams I made. This is how I work on new patterns and then translate into instructions. This pattern is so simple I believe you can follow along just using the diagrams. Every ring is 8 ds, p, 8 ds or 8 ds, j, 8 ds. Every chain is 5 ds, p, 5 ds. Keeping that in mind, start with the first ring in diagram 1.

Remember to hold your work upright for the rings and turn it completely upside down for the chains.

If you get stuck, comment and I'll answer. Try this, I think you will find it easier then wading thru the step by step instructions.

The 5 on the chain means 5 ds and the 8 on the ring means 8 ds.

When you've tatted the required number of chains and rings (see the whole bookmark above) you turn the corner using the 4 rings joined together and then simply duplicate the rings and chains:

For the medallions I simply tatted the 4 rings as in the ends of the bookmark and finished it with that 4th chain. Then connected them with a crocheted chain stitch "cord" consisting of 60 stitches. That's all there is to it. Of course you can use thin ribbon instead of the crocheted cord or you can get really fancy and use a piece of old thin metal chain. Add colors, beads and you can probably tat many different looking bookmarks from this one pattern.

Abbreviations used in these patterns:

ds = doublestitch

p = picoe

R = ring

sep = separated

CLR = close ring

j = join

If I omitted any please check abbreviations for the angel pattern.

Okay...here we go:

Butterfly #1

Shuttle only:

R. 5 ds, 7 p sep by 2 ds, 3 ds, small p, 2 ds, CLR
R.2 ds, j to last p of last R, 3 ds, 7 p sep by 2 ds, 5 ds, CLR.
R 10 ds, large p, 8 ds, small p, 2 ds CLR.
R. 2 ds, j to last p of last R, 8 ds, large p, 10 ds, CLR.

Take both threads and bring them up between the to large rings, tie them to the small joining between the two large rings. Cut them to make the antenna. I like to put a drop of tacky glue under that know to keep the antenna upright.

Tip: When making these butterflies keep your rings tightly against each other. Do not leave any space in between.

Butterfly #2

Shuttle only:

R 15 ds, 5 p, sep by 1 ds, (1 small p, 1 medium p, 1 large p, 1 medium p, 1 small p) 13 ds, small p, 2 ds CLR.
R 2 ds, j to last p of last R, 13 ds, 5 p same as last ring, 15 ds CLR.
R 10 ds, large p, 8 ds, small p, 2 ds CLR
R 2 ds, j to last p of last R, 8 ds, large p, 10 ds, CLR
